Programme director: prof.dr. Marina Lukšič Hacin Programme descriptionThe MA programme is based on the cooperation of six European universities who share the responsibility for the course’s syllabus. University of Oldenburg provides the compulsory modules for the 1st and 2nd semester; other partners guarantee the availability of optional modules that are to be taken in semester 2 and 3. Following an intensive course at the beginning of the course for which all students and teachers come to Oldenburg, the programme will depend on distance learning elements to a major part. If possible, students shall complete parts of the course at partner universities. Students will be awarded with a national MA as well as a joint European degree. Medium of teaching will be the English language, but material relevant to research will be also provided in the partner’s local language. Information: www.learningmigration.com Admission requirementsGeneral qualification for university entrance or equivalent plus admission requirements of partner universities that are to be fixed in admission regulations of each partner university. Student’s admission is to be based on knowledge in migration studies, intercultural relations, and empirical methods, that students have to document via the study of specific modules, papers, essays or examinations in the field in their undergraduate course. In order to successfully finish the course, good English language skills are required. These will be evaluated before course start. (See individual partners’ regulations.) Skills in other modern languages are recommended, but not compulsory. Student can join the programme in 2009/2010 study year. Educational and professional goalsStudents will acquire deepened knowledge of theories, empirical studies and methods in migration research, based on interdisciplinary and trans-cultural perspectives. The combination of theoretical and methodological content will prepare them to develop and realise their own research projects. The programme aims at enabling students to critically evaluate migration studies and migration policies, to intervene in scholarly, political and other public debates. Students gain insights in practical work with migrants and within intercultural contexts. They acquire professional skills for conceptual, coordinating and evaluating work in this field.Upon completion of the programme, the student has attended all compulsory classes and completed the required course work. Throughout the course students have written several papers, completed an internship and conducted research as a basis for their thesis of 30 ECTS credits. The student will earn a minimum of 36 credits from partner institutions. Access to further studiesThe degree qualifies students for doctoral studies when all formal criteria have been met.
