The year 2012 marks an impressive collection of international publications by the researchers at the University of Nova Gorica

This is only achievable through continuous strive towards top quality work and internationally acknowledged excellence in research. The key characteristic of all the university research units – this year, we already have eleven of them, together with the Laboratory of Quantum Optics and the Center for Biomedical Sciences and Engineering – is their collaboration with the world’s most prestigious research centers. We believe that our scientific and technological excellence can only be properly evaluated if compared to its best counterparts in the world. Apart from being engaged in top quality research projects, these connections enable us a relatively successful turnout at applying to international tenders and funding notices, which in part complements the relatively low funding that we get for our research from the Slovenian government.

The most telling proof that connections with foreign partners and systematic financial support given to top quality research that make it easier to plan long-term growth of the University of Nova Gorica is, especially in these, for science, challenging times, the right path, is the overview of the ten most prestigious articles that our scientists published in prestigious international journals. Considering the relative smallness of the University of Nova Gorica, measured both in terms of its budget as well as staff and faculty members, in combination with the University’s relatively short time of existence, these results are downright incredible and it is hard for other universities in the area to match them.
