The Third European Symposium on Photocatalysis – JEP 2013

Date of publication: 24. 9. 2013
Events

In collaboration with the EPF (»European Photocatalysis Federation«), the Laboratory for Environmental Research of the University of Nova Gorica will organize the Third European Symposium on Photocatalysis. It will be taking place in Portorož, between 25th and 27th September.

Photocatalysis: Sustainable Development for Better Quality of Life

By photocatalysis and the usage of cheap and easily accessible materials, it is possible to reduce and illuminate a lot of unwanted by-products in water which are the result of human activities. The process which is based on semiconductors activated with light has received significant attention from scientists and industrial developers in the past twenty years.

Photocatalysis is already incorporated in many materials, such as glass, ceramic, paint, metal and products, such as light bulbs, street coatings, and cement binders. The agents (applications) for cleaning water or air, for the removal of mold, and for indoor and outdoor coatings are available for domestic use and the industry. The existent concern for the environment represents a bright future for technology, especially for applications that are used for improving the quality of water and of the indoor and outdoor air.

However, cleaning of the environment is not the only aspect of photocatalysis, as the positive results are also visible in applications that are related to energy, namely extraction of fuels by water (hydrogen) fission or by reduction of carbon dioxide in the artificial process of photosynthesis which leads to the very much desired re-use of the CO2 emissions.

The symposium brings the latest news and discoveries from the fields, such as:

  • photocatalytic materials and methods for understanding the mechanisms of photocatalysis,
  • European and international standards,
  • photocatalytic applications; purification of water and air, sterilization, self-cleaning surfaces, indoor and outdoor coatings for roads and buildings,
  • applications for generating energy.

Apart from the lectures held by leading experts in this field, the JEP 2013 will also enable an exchange between academics and the industry, mainly through posters, exhibitions, and bilateral meetings. The number of participants will be approximately 200; they come from more than thirty different countries.
