At yesterday’s meeting of the University of Nova Gorica’s Management board a decision was reached that Vipava would become the building site for University’s campus, on condition that the Vipava Municipality, within the next six month, changes the purpose of the land availability and makes sure that flood safety has been taken care of.

At the end of October, the public call for the sale, renting, or handing out of the building rights for the land chosen for the University’s campus closed. Four legal persons responded to the call and offered six locations: three in Nova Gorica, one in Ajdovščina, one in Vipava and one between Sežana in Lipica.

The offers that were received were presented to the Senate, the Student Council, the International Council of the University and the University’s Management board. The latter also charted the criteria for choosing the best possible location. The location between Sežana in Lipica has been removed from the selection at the beginning of the process.

From then on, the Management board was deciding between the locations in Nova Gorica, Ajdovščina and Vipava. Vipava was chosen as the location that best suits all the expected characteristics and enables the beginning of the fast realization of plans.

The Vipava Municipality offered to the University of Nova Gorica to purchase the 4,8 hectare of land, stretching between the Vipava River, the Diocesan high school and the senior citizens home called Pristan. The following year, the Municipality is to offer an additional 1,2, hectare of land. By bestowing preemption on the 3 hectare of land, the Municipality also enabled some extra expansion, in case the university develops faster than expected. The 9 hectares of land enable the development of the University for at least the next 25 years. The University will move all its activities that are now scattered around various locations in Ljubljana, Postojna, Ajdovščina, Nova Gorica, Gorizia (Italy) and Venice (Italy) to Vipava. At the same time, the University will keep the entire Lanthieri Mansion.

According to the words of the University of Nova Gorica’s Rector, prof. dr. Danilo Zavrtanik, the building of the university center in Vipava is an excellent choice. In Vipava, the University will build a typical American kind of campus which will certainly be one of a kind in Slovenia. This will also make the University more recognizable, and offer the students superb study conditions and a once in a lifetime experience of studying in a modern academic environment.
