University of Nova Gorica invites to the lecture: "X-ray vision: optics at the atomic scale" by Dr. Saša Bajt (Photon Science DESY - Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, Hamburg).

Lecture will take place on Thursday, 22 May 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Lanthieri mansion in Vipava.

Lecture will be in English.

The discovery of X-rays, about 100 years ago, led to immediate applications in medicine. Soon afterwards it was observed that x-rays diffract from crystals and this gave birth to x-ray crystallography and studying the structure of matter on the atomic and molecular level. With the development of brighter x-ray sources such studies could be performed on ever more complex systems. With highly intense X-ray free electron lasers we can now study also the dynamics of reactions and processes and obtain high-resolution images of biological samples before the onset of structural degradation due to the radiation itself. Novel X-ray optics play an important part in this development and in this presentation I will give an overview of multilayer-based X-ray optics and their use in X-ray science.
