University of Nova Gorica announces the postdoc or research fellow job vacancy.
Deadline: the position is filled.

It is expected that the applicant:

  • holds a Ph.D. degree in the relevant field,
  • has the academic title of Assistant or Assistant Professor (docent), or fulfils the academic criteria for obtaining these titles at the University of Nova Gorica,
  • will accept teaching duties in academic programmes at the University of Nova Gorica.

The selected candidate will be involved in the international research project, funded within the IPA Adriatic Cross-border Cooperation, DeFishGear – Derelict Fishing Gear Management system in the Adriatic Region. This project aims to develop a coordinated and integrated approach at international level for the measurement and monitoring of marine litter and microplastics along coastal shorelines, in the sea and on the seabed. The main focus is to prepare a strategy for the reduction of marine litter pollution in the Adriatic Sea by involving different stakeholders (fishing industries, researchers, policy-makers, NGOs and recycling industries) with special attention on activities involving fishermen.
Within the objectives of the project, the candidate will be primarily engaged in the research of organic pollutants adsorbed on microplastics. The main task of this study is to design a protocol of extraction (e.g. ASE, Sohxlet) and of analysis (e.g. GC-MS, GC-ECD) of the selected pollutants (e.i. PCBs and organochlorine pesticides) present on microplastics samples. Thus, a candidate with a strong background in analytical chemistry is preferred.
The selected candidate will, according to her/his habilitation, undertake university lectures in the School of Environmental Science.
The position will commence on approximately July 1, 2014. Appointment will initially be made for one year with possible extension for work on other projects.
