The University of Nova Groica, lead partner of the standard project ASTIS (Groundwater of transboundary aquifer Soča/Isonzo), invites You to the final conference, which will take place on 21th October 2014, at the Hotel Perla in Nova Gorica, at 09:30.

Groundwater represents the world’s largest reservoir of drinking water and represents a hidden source, which is, from the quantitative point of view, more important than surface water. Besides its importance as the source of drinking water, it also has an important role in industry and agriculture. At the same time it also plays an essential role in ecology. Since water resources are limited, the management has to be planned carefully, according to the principles of sustainability. Transboundary water resources, surface waters as well as groundwater, do not follow and stop at national boundaries and require internationally coordinated actions for sustainable and effective management.

The project ASTIS has been running from 2011 to 2014. Its overall goal is to prepare the guidelines for the management of groundwater resources in the cross-border area of the Soča river catchment area.

Two pilot areas have been chosen for project activities, which cover the area of different transboundary aquifer systems: the karstic Kanin Mountain and the Soča plain area.

The project ASTIS is co-funded by the European Fund for Regional Development within the scope of the Slovenia-Italy Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007−2013 and national funds in the amount of 989,514.41 EUR.
