PROF. DR. GREGOR KOCIJAN (Jun. 9, 1933 - Aug. 10, 2016)

On Wednesday, August 10 2016, Slovene literary history lost professor doctor Gregor Kocijan, an incredible researcher and lecturer.

Honorary Professor dr. Gregor Kocijan was born in 1933 and was one of the most esteemed Slovene literary historians. In his research, he dealt with Slovene short stories (Kratka pripovedna proza od Trdine do Kersnika, 1983, Kratka pripovedna proza v obdobju moderne: literarnozgodovinska študija, 1996, Slovenska kratka proza : 1919-1929, 2012) and Slovene poetry of the second half of the 19th century. He was also involved in the sociological research of literary habits of Slovenians and he wrote a book about Janko Kersnik (2009).

For many years, he was the editor of the Jezik in slovstvo journal. In 2013, when he turned 80, they dedicated a special double issue to him. He taught at the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana and at the Faculty of Education in Maribor. Between 2007 and 2011, he taught Slovene literature at the School of Humanities at the University of Nova Gorica and thrilled his students with his exception personality, extensive knowledge, openness and mostly his vigorous lecturing.

When he turned eighty, the School of Humanities at the University of Nova Gorica organized a symposium dedicated to his work. Many generations of students of Slovene studies will profit from the research and work of prof. dr. Kocijan. Everyone who had the opportunity to meet him and be enriched by his knowledge and wisdom, will miss him terribly.

The school and staff members at the University of Nova Gorica would like to express our deepest condolences.
