On Friday, 15 November, 2019 the School of Humanities (at the University of Nova Gorica) and the Scientific Research Center of the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (specifically, its Research Station in Nova Gorica) organized a linguistic conference called Škrabčevi dnevi 11.

Škrabec Days 11

Nova Gorica is also known as the city of Stanislav Škrabec (due to his work in Kostanjevica), one of Slovenia's best known linguists. Even though more than one hundred years have passed since Škrabec’s death, Nova Gorica remains an important linguistic center. The Škrabec Days complement the tradition of other linguistic events, such as linguistic conferences, workshops and lectures. The Škrabec Days were founded by the academician, prof. dr. Jože Toporišič. Since 2011, the Škrabec Days have been organized by the School of Humanities (at the University of Nova Gorica) and the Scientific Research Center of the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (specifically, its Research Station in Nova Gorica).

This year’s Škrabec Days hosted linguists from various Slovene and foreign institutions. The guests were first greeted by dr. Franc Marušič, Professor at the School of Humanities and a Researcher at the Center for Cognitive Science of Language (at the University of Nova Gorica). After the introductory note, 16 papers, dealing with dialectology, etymology, linguistic normativism, morphology, phonetics and language assimilation were presented and accompanied by lively debates. As previously done, after the Škrabec Days conference, the University of Nova Gorica Publishing House will publish a collection of the lectures.
