The School of humanities of the University of Nova Gorica is hosting The First Scientific Conference SinFonIJA, on Friday October 10, 2008.

In the future, this conference will be organized in different places in the area of central and south-eastern Europe (the lands of the former Austria-Hungary and the former Yugoslavia), thereby connecting formal linguists between the Adriatic Sea and the Panonnian Plan and strengthening the ties between the institutions where formal linguistics is part of the research program.

The conference will feature talks by researchers from the institutions where the conference will be hosted in the future: Jonathan Kaye (University of Nova Gorica, University of Ljubljana), Anna Cardinaletti (University of Venice), Željko Bošković (University of Connecticut at Storrs), Nataša Miličević (Tilburg University, University of Novi Sad), Agnes Bende-Farkas (Hungarian Academy of Sciences), Slavica Kochovska (University of Nova Gorica) and Kamiah Arnaut-Karović (University of Sarajevo).

The talks will deal with several phonological and syntactic issues in natural languages, ranging from the treatment of quantification to the modeling of agreement in structures with coordinate subjects.

More information about the conference are available on webpage: http://http://sabotin.p-ng.si/~jezik/sinfonija/.
