Literature of the Slovenians in Italy

Objectives and competences

Students will be able to practically use the knowledge of the literature of the Slovenians in Italy:

– literary micro system specifics;

– ability to recognise the themes and motifs and their evolution;

– understanding the literature in the frame of its Slovenian and Italian literary and historical context.

Prerequisites

The courses Literature at cultural junctures and Slovenian literature I-III are prerequisites for attending this course. It is connected to other literary science courses on the same level.

Content (Syllabus outline)

– The questionable concept of “Literature of the Slovenians in Italy”.

– Short historical overview:

  • first manuscripts
  • Reformation and Counter-Reformation
  • Baroque, Classicism and Enlightenment.

– Regional specifics:

  • 19th century in the Veneto, Goriška and Trieste region.

– 20th century:

  • avantgarde
  • interwar period.

– Contemporary literature of Slovenians in Italy:

  • - poetry after the Second World War
  • - prose after the Second World War
  • - drama after the Second World War.

– Typological characteristics of the literature of Slovenians in Italy.

Intended learning outcomes

Students will be qualified to research the literature of Slovenians in Italy as a literary micro system.

Assessment

Written exam. In order to take the final exam, the students will be required to attend the seminar, take active participation in discussions and in the course’s continual work (presentation of the paper and discussion on it in the seminar).

Lecturer's references

Ana Toroš, Assistant Professor, teaches literature at the School of Humanities, University of Nova Gorica. Her research interests include the Slovenian poetry of the first half of the 20th century, especially in the context of Romance and Germanic literatures. Professor Toroš is specifically interested in the poetry and translation opus of the Slovene poet Alojz Gradnik and the Italian poetry of the Trieste region. She has published papers in internationally acclaimed journals such as Slavistična revija, Annales, Slovene studies, Jezik in slovstvo. She received a one-year international research fellowship CSIUT (Consorzio per lo Sviluppo Internazionale dell’Universita degli Studi di Trieste) and did her research work in Trieste in the 2009/10 academic year. Professor Toroš has focused on the image of Trieste and Trieste-related topics in Slovene and Italian poetry of the first half of the 20th century. In 2011, Professor Toroš received an award of the Republic of Slovenia Government for her research work done in Trieste.
