Sociology of gender

This course is part of the programme:
Master in Slovene Studies - Literary Science

Objectives and competences

The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the sociology of gender in historical, theoretical and methodological perspective. The historical perspective will provide an insight into the economic, intellectual, literary, artistic and cultural definitions of the socially acceptable gender roles in the past and in the present in Slovenia and globally. The second perspective constitutes a theoretical framework and the methodological – analytical tools for the understanding of structural social determinants that are key for comprehending the role of women and men in the society.

Prerequisites

The study of this course is vertically connected to other basic courses in literary science programme and also to the level 1 study programme since it gives to them the neccessary gender perspective.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The content of the course is both historical and theoretically analytical. The role of gender in society and culture is presented in the broader context of the historical changes of the role of women in Europe, with special emphasis on the last two: the efforts and struggle of women concerning their right to education, work and political participation; employment and work of women as the key element of the economic survival of families; mythologies and legends about the weaker sex as the economically, socially and emotionally discriminated half of humanity.
