Program description

The Master degree study program »Physics and astrophysics« is implemented in two modules, Astrophysics and Solid State Physics. Both modules have strong research focus and offer specialized topics in the respective fields. Students are closely involved in research activities of the laboratories and centers of the University of Nova Gorica and of its partner institutions. For example, the list of current international experiments and collaborations the Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology is involved in can be found here, while the top 10 articles published by scientists in our School of Science in the last year can be found here. The research introduces state-of-the-art science and leading-edge technologies and the program provides worldwide competitiveness of its graduates, both in pursuing their professional or academic career.

Basic goals

The objective of the Master study program »Physics and astrophysics« is the training of specialists in the fields of astrophysics and solid state physics. The two specializations of Master studies allow to students both to continue their studies at the doctoral level, as well as to get employed in a wide range of companies, institutions and governmental bodies in Slovenia and abroad, either due to specific skills, or because of the ability to apply mathematical, computer and experimental tools and physical approach to solving problems, and of the ability to work and communicate in an international environment.

General competences acquired through the program:

  • general competencies offered by the first-level program;
  • ability of problem abstraction and analysis;
  • independent project work;
  • ability to work in international research teams;
  • ability to transfer the obtained knowledge into practical applications.

Subject-specific competences acquired through the program:

  • subject-specific competencies offered by the first-level program;
  • in-depth knowledge of astrophysics or
  • in-depth knowledge of solid state physics.

The Master degree study program »Physics and astrophysics« is implemented in two modules, Astrophysics and Solid State Physics. Both modules have strong research focus (39 ECTS have to be obtained from research work and master thesis) and offer specialized topics in the respective fields. Compared to undergraduate studies, students are strongly involved in research activities of the laboratories and centers of the University of Nova Gorica and of its partner institutions. With a focus on research work, which introduces state-of-the-art science and leading-edge technologies, the program provides worldwide competitiveness of its graduates, both in pursuing their professional or academic career. Laboratories and centers associated with the School of Science have been selected under the FP7 project RegPot SUNGREEN as the most promising regional research organizations in the fields of environmental science and the science of new materials.
