History

University of Nova Gorica opened new premises at Via della Croce 3 in Gorizia (Italy) on 25 September 2006.

With the opening of renovated rooms of the building of the former School Hall in Gorizia, the School of Environmental Sciences of the University of Nova Gorica will gain an additional 1,600 m2 of rooms, which will be intended for the implementation of the Environmental Sciences university study programme and undergraduate study programme.

The building holds the following rooms:

  • two student laboratories (a chemistry one and a biology-geology one),
  • a spacious study room for students,
  • a computer classroom with 20 computers,
  • amphitheatric natural science classroom (60 seats),
  • four additional classrooms with 25 - 50 seats,
  • a conference room, six offices for lecturers, and a secretariat.

The building is equipped with handicapped access and lift. Students and lecturers are also provided with relaxation in the enclosed garden behind the building.

The University of Nova Gorica will solve a great deal of its current lack of room with the acquisition of new premises, while the company ALPE d.d. will ensure for itself a suitable activity in the renovated building, which will justify its investment and enable both the preservation of Slovene cultural heritage in Gorizia and the revitalisation of the historical centre of Gorizia. The building was constructed in 1898 and represented the first private school centre of Slovenes in Gorizia at the time of Austria-Hungary. It served educational purposes until 1976; after that time and until recently it served as the seat of Slovene cultural organisations.

In such a manner the University of Nova Gorica is additionally strengthening its international direction and integration into the international academic sphere, for which it has been recognised since its establishment in 1995. At the same time it sensibly complements the offer of university education in Gorizia, which was, until now, with the presence of the University of Udine and the University of Trieste, directed mostly towards the field of social science.
