Research Associate / Fellow in GNSS Ionospheric Research (fixed term)
Applications are invited for the above post at the University of Nova Gorica (UNG), based between the neighbouring cities of Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy). The Centre for Atmospheric Research (CAR) at UNG was established in 2004 and is internationally recognised for its research in the fields of remote sensing of tropospheric ionospheric properties. In particular, it is oriented towards the study of the influence of ionospheric disturbances on the accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), which is of key importance for the support which GNSS services provide for activities such as precision agriculture, surveying, geodesy, land management and off-shore operations.
The successful candidate will join the CAR to work on the new and exciting CALIBRA (Countering GNSS high Accuracy applications Limitations due to Ionospheric disturbances in BRAzil) project, funded by the GSA (European GNSS Agency) through the 7th Framework Program, FP7. The project involves Brazilian and European partners, including the Belgian GNSS receiver manufacturer Septentrio Satellite Navigation. The research will be based on experimental data collected in Brazil through project partner UNESP (Sao Paulo State University). In addition, the candidate will also be involved in the ESA project SLOIONO (monitoring and mitigation of ionospheric effects on GNSS in Alpine-Adriatic region).
Candidates should have a PhD in the field of Mathematics, Physics, Electric or Electronic Engineering, Geodesy and Surveying or a closely related subject, and an interest in GNSS error modelling, propagation effects and study of ionospheric properties and processes. Ideal expertise would include experience in GNSS processing algorithms, in particular ionospheric modelling. Evidence of the ability to publish research papers and to present work at conferences is required, as well as organizational skills to support project management and production of project reports. Experience in IT and computer programming, as well as a willingness to travel are essential for this post. Excellent communication and team work skills are fundamental to the success of this project.
