The Individual Fellowship was received by Dr. Katja Džepina from the Center for Atmospheric Research, which will research air pollution in the most polluted capital in Europe – Sarajevo. In her work, Dr. Džepina will use advanced methods for determining the sources of air pollution and quantifying the parameters that describe the effects on health, while trying to attribute these to sources of pollution. Air pollution is the most important unfavourable health impact we are aware of. In 2019, more than 8 million people worldwide died prematurely due to air pollution, for Slovenia this estimate is around 1700. We often assume that this is a problem of undeveloped countries and that there are no extreme air quality problems in Europe, but unfortunately this is not true.

The Widening Fellowship was received Dr. Tina Škorjanc from Materials Research Laboratory. Dr. Škorjanc will utilize this two-year funding scheme to pursue a project whose aim is to develop novel sensors for detecting biological agents. The project will combine the researcher’s knowledge of covalent polymeric materials and the host laboratory’s expertise in sensor fabrication. Jointly, they will design new fluorescent covalent organic frameworks, fully characterize them, and test them as potential sensors for phospholipid membranes and other biological molecules.
