She won the prize for her book of seven stories, titled Čebelja družina (‘The Bee Family’), which was published at the beginning of February this year.

The central thread of the seven stories are rituals or old customs, typical of Slovene culture, which are repositioned to a different context or to a different, contemporary time, where they acquire a new role and image. The theme is that of a family, whether unrealised (Jabolkosnedka), united and then separated by life’s circumstances (Rdeči petelin), or one that could have become real under different circumstances (Čebelja družina). With the exception of one, which gives the collection its title and is set in a specific period in history, all the stories take place in the present time, while at the same time having a timeless effect thanks to the rituals and atmosphere.

The European Union Prize for Literature has been awarded to up-and-coming European writers since 2009.
