On 3 November 2021, the Dean of the School of Arts, Prof. Boštjan Potokar, on behalf of the University of Nova Gorica Foundation, granted the Jožko Markič Award to two students of the School of Arts of the University of Nova Gorica.

For the second consecutive year, the A-media, d. o. o. company donated funds to the University of Nova Gorica Foundation in memory of the company’s co-founder Jožko Markič, who strongly influenced the development of audiovisual culture in the Goriška Region. The donated funds are awarded to chosen first and second cycle students of the School of Arts.

Each year, the University of Nova Gorica Foundation will award the donated funds to a student of the School of Arts of the University of Nova Gorica who, in addition to quality work as part of their studies, significantly connects students and the social environment.

About the award for the 2020/2021 academic year

The Student Affairs Committee of the School of Arts of the University of Nova Gorica, together with a representative of A-media, looked for students who, in addition to their quality study and creative work, also showed, as Jožko Markič did, a sense for ‘man and community’.

For the 2020/2021 academic year, the University of Nova Gorica Foundation granted two awards:

  • one in the amount of €500 – to a first cycle student,
  • one in the amount of €750 – to a second cycle student

About the recipients of the award for the 2020/2021 academic year

For the 2020/2021 academic year, the University of Nova Gorica Foundation decided to award the following two students:

Reasoning: Ana Prebil has just completed her third year of studies in animation and is now starting her year as a candidate for graduation. She managed to secure a place in several film festivals already with her first student film, Smoker, and also showed general success in her studies.
For all three years of her studies, Ana Prebil engaged in community-building. Together with a few of her fellow students from the School of Arts, they set up an informal creative group called Jarka early on in their studies. Ana also encouraged a strong connection between the school and its students and soon became the official student representative in the Senate and was very constructive in her efforts. She was the connecting link of her generation. The time has now come for her to enter the international arena, a very realistic prospect in her year as a candidate for graduation with her successful entry in several international manifestations for young artists. She was chosen to attend the Ars Electronica festival university and, together with 100 young people from all around the world, spent three weeks exploring how to transform the world. She is about to engage in her next international activity, this time from the field of film. She is included in an international film workshop, which will take place in France, Germany and Slovenia.

Reasoning: Ivana Kalc enrolled in studies in our school when the pandemic had already started and we soon had to move to distance learning. She is an independent cultural creator and a performer and curator in modern dance. By enrolling in the Media Arts and Practices programme, she decided to engage in research in the broader field of art practices.
Ivana was immediately fully involved in the programme and, albeit remotely, studied the possibilities of the compulsory and optional content offered by the School of Arts. Over the course of her first year, she produced a number of works that were chosen for public presentation and included in all our major presentations, be it the group exhibition in the Xcenter in Nova Gorica, the Topolò Station workshop, the Isola Cinema festival, our virtual garden at Ars Electronica in Linz or the DigitalBigScreen festival at Speculum Artium in Trbovlje or the Festival of Slovenian Film in Portorož.
Although she had little opportunity to spend time with her colleagues in person, she managed to establish good connections and relationships during distance learning and connected the different generations. She improved the level of joint debates, deliberations and creativity.

Congratulations!
