Objectives and competences

The goal of this course is to introduce biotechnology methods in plants. The objective of the course is to give students new knowledge and widening of the knowledge acquired in other course by handling of classical and modern plant biotechnology processes with concrete examples on vines, including breeding of healthy plants, plants with improved characteristics and plants for biomolecule production.

Prerequisites

Prior knowledge of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Organic chemistry, Biochemistry, Plant biology, Cell biology and Plant Physiology and Biotechnology (Bachelor's level) is needed.

Content

The course will be composed of following chapters: * Introduction * Organization and expression of plant genome with an emphasis on grapevine * Expression of inherited information * Genotype, environment and phenotype * Genomic approaches in plant sciences * Bioinformatics tools with examples of their usage on grapevine * Enzymes in genetic engineering * Cloning vectors * Methods in plant biotechnology * Plant tissue cultures (types of cultures, micropropagation, automation, aclimation, breeding of healthy plants) with an emphasis on grapevine tissue cultures * Production of plant secondary metabolites, * Comparison of classical and modern biotechnological methods of plant breeding with the examples on grapevine * Methods of transformation of plants by bacteria and viruses * Indirect methods of transformation of plants * Possibilities of production of new proteins and other substances in genetically modified plants, * Coexistence of genetically modified plants in world * Detection of genetically modified plants * Legislation in the field of genetically modified plants.

Knowledge and understanding * Knowing and understanding concepts, principles and processes in plant biotechnology.

Applications * Knowing the possibilities of the applications of presented processes.

Assessment

Written laboratory work report (10%), Tutorial (10%), Seminars is presented orally in discussion with other students and the lecturer responsible for the course (10%), Written exam (70%)

Nosilka je izredna profesorica za področje Biotehnologija. Ima dolgoletne praktične in teoretične izkušnje s področja biotehnologije in fiziologije rastlin, tudi na področju vinogradništva.

Njena znanstvena odličnost na področju biotehnologije in fiziologije se odraža tudi na številnih znanstvenih projektih, strokovnih nalogah, znanstvenih in strokovnih objavah, ki so tudi citirane na mednarodnem nivoju.
