Engineering Chemistry

Objectives and competences

Aims:
The aim of this course is to renew and expand the knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry, and to acquaint students with the fundamentals of chemical engineering and the work with dangerous chemicals. The focus is on skills, such as the properties of the elements and materials, basic chemical reactions and basic chemical processes. Based on the lectures and tutorials students acquire the means of selecting suitable materials and their protection, while being given an insight into the possibilities for the use of mechanical engineering, electrotechnical and computer knowledge in chemistry and chemical engineering process.

Competencies:
- Knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry, for example, properties of elements and materials, basic chemical reactions and basic chemical processes,
- Basic knowledge of chemical engineeringBasic knowledge of the safety issues when working with dangerous chemicals.

Prerequisites

Required prerequisite knowledge from basic chapters in Mathematics (functions) and Physics.
Connection with other courses: Course provides some basic skills that are useful in other subjects such as Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering and Environment and Manufacturing Systems.

    • Thermochemistry

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:
Students are introduced to the basic principles of inorganic and organic chemistry and chemical engineering.

After that basic production processes are discussed based on inorganic and organic chemistry and knowledge of relevant environmental protection.

The emphasis is on mastering the basic chemical concepts for adequate communication with specialized personnel (chemists, chemical engineers).

Assessment

The exam: Condition to enter the exam is positive score (60% points) from stechiometry. Student performs written and oral examination in the total matter of the subject. Student presents a seminar in selected topic in Chemistry. Assessment of Competence: at test from stechiometry practical knowledge of stechiometry is checked. At written and oral exams knowledge of general, inorganic and organic chemistry, fundamentals of chemical engineering and chemical safety protocols examined.
