Objectives and competences

Familiarity with the field of digital humanities, which requires both openness to experimentation and critical rigor, which is the foundation of humanistic hermeneutics. Interdisciplinary projects are based on dialogue of specialists of various disciplines that the digital humanist reflects on, while still remaining a specialist in ker or his core field of scholarship or art. Students gain insight in computer science domain, in language of arts, especially graphic design, and become aware of basic methodological differences that in the digital humanities an opportunity and not an obstacle. New media art as a link between new information technologies and sciences to the traditions of artistic creation is an analogon to the connection of humanities and technology or exact sciences. Digitization has resulted in a complete cultural transcoding, and therefore both methods of research and presentation of research findings have changed a lot. Also the loosening of the assumed boundaries between social institutions is widespread. The course focuses on the fundamental problem of an utterance as a subject and a result of research - digital humanities require conscious planning of the forms of enunciation. The student obains the experience of cooperation in practical digital humanities project.

• Basic concepts of digital humanities.
• Interdisciplinary integration of various disciplines of the humanities, computer and information sciences and various branches of art and design.
• The first generation of digital humanities and contemporary challenges. The most visible projects.
• Historical overview of new media art practices.
• E-editions. Data Visualization. Serious computer video games. Open source and Creative Commons. Mass outsourcing (crowdsourcing).
• Computer data processing, World Wide Web, Web 2.0, mobile network display units, integration of the human body and technological devices

Intended learning outcomes

Students will learn the fundamental concepts and methods that appear in the intermediate area between the humanities traditions and ways of processing the digitized information. They are capable of critical reflection transformations of traditional research methods and design of new methodological models. Object emphasizes teamwork, which is the foundation of interdisciplinary collaboration in digital humanities projects.

Successful completion of an oral examination. Successful participation in the seminar is a prerequisite for the exam.

Doc. Dr. Aleš Vaupotič je predavatelj književnosti na Fakulteti za humanistiko na Univerzi v Novi Gorici. Ukvarja se z raziskavami literarnega realizma, teorijo novomedijske umetnosti ter s teorijo diskurza.

Doc. Dr. Ales Vaupotič is the literature lecturer at the School of Humanities at the University of Nova Gorica. He is researching literary realism, the theory of new media art and the theory of discourse.
