Feminist literary criticism

Objectives and competences

Students will be able to write the feminist analysis or interpretation of the literary text.

Prerequisites

Succesful study is vertically connected with other topics in the field of literary history taught in the mandatory courses Slovene Literature I, II, III. At the horizontal level, the subject is related to other courses concerning literary history and criticism. It is also connects with the subjects from the field of linguistics.

Content

Thematisations of female experiences, literary constructions of female phenomena, relationship between masculinity and femininity, identification of gender stereotypes and literary schemes, study of structural and genre phenomena of (autobiographical) “écriture feminine”, representations of body and corporeity in the selected texts, deconstruction and supererogation of dualisms (subject-object, man-woman, high-low, spiritual-physical etc.), placing women writers on the national, Central European, European map

Intended learning outcomes

The students will adopt basic concepts of the feminist literary criticiscm. They will be able to transfer them into the literary analysis and interpretation.

Lecturer's references

Dr. Katja Mihurko Poniž is a Full Professor in Literature and at the School of Humanities of the University of Nova Gorica. Her research interests include: new approaches in literary sciences (predominantly gender studies), intercultural contacts, literary geography, Slovenian drama. In the field of Slovenian literature research, her attention is devoted to the works of women writers.
