Dialectology

This course is part of the programme
Master in SL studies - Linguistics

Objectives and competences

The objectives of the course are as follows:
• to recognize and understand the development of Slovenian language into its dialects and using the scientific linguistic methods to describe and understand individual phonological developments
• to deepen knowledge on the Slovenian dialects with the morphological and syntectic analyses
• to recognize and understand language contact and the mechanisms that lead to the contact (especially in the case of the Slovenian-Romance language contact and the so-called hidden interferences)
• to understand the notions bilinguism, multilinguism, diglosia.

Prerequisites

The course relates to the course of Dialectology I as well as to the courses of phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and the history of the Slovenian language.

Content

The course relates to the course Dialectology I, but it deals with the development of Slovenian dialects and the Slovenian language from the Proto-Slavic period on more profoundly.

It deals with the analysis of morphological and syntactic features of individual dialects in detail.

It also deals with the language contact, understanding the phenomenon and different forms of linguistic interference

Intended learning outcomes

A student will deepen his knowledge on the basic dialectal description, he/she is able to find out the basic characteristics of an individual local speech in a dialectal text and explain the development of individual linguistic phenomena.
He/she understands what triggers linguistic influence in language contacts (linguistic and non- linguistic reasons).
Using the contrastive analysis of dialectal texts (either of central dialects or dialects in contact) he/she recognizes hidden interferences, i.e. structural and semantic interferences.
He/she recognizes the linguistic items that establish dialectal discourse, i.e. discursive coherence and cohesion.
