The University of Nova Gorica is offering the position of assistant / junior researcher in the area of aerosol research and climate change.
Deadline for applications: 9. 12. 2020

We invite candidates who are interested in working as an assistant/junior researcher (doctoral candidate) to apply for this position at the student-friendly and research-oriented University of Nova Gorica. The work will be conducted at the
Centre for Atmospheric Research (CRA), in a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment supported by state-of-the-art equipment, and will include direct involvement in the international research arena.

The University of Nova Gorica’s Centre for Atmospheric Research uses physical methods to study the role of aerosols in climate change and air pollution at the global, regional and local levels, using both remote and in-situ measurements. A significant part of our work includes airborne measurements using (ultra)light aircraft and identification of air pollution sources. Our most important research area is measurement of optical absorption of aerosols.

The impact of absorbing aerosols on the climate is associated with major uncertainties, which can be reduced only through measurement. We have conducted six global measurement campaigns and are planning a further three, during which we measured aerosol absorption and (in some campaigns) light particle size distribution and scattering. The selected candidate will quantify the contributions to atmospheric heating rates of various sources of air pollution in fine and coarse particle fractions. They will process the data from previous campaigns and model, plan and conduct new laboratory measurements and campaigns (Cape Verde Islands, the Himalaya, pole-to-pole flight).

The work will include research visits to foreign institutions (Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland; Tropos, Germany; University of Milano-Biccoca, Italy).
