PROF. DR. JUKKA JOKILEHTO (1938 - 2023)

IN MEMORIAM - PROF. DR. JUKKA JOKILEHTO

It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Professor dr. Jukka Jokilehto, professor emeritus of the University of Nova Gorica. We lost our esteemed professor and one of the most respected experts and scholars in the field of the International Conservation doctrine.

His professional and academic achievements are extensive and diverse. His knowledge and contributions in the field of history and theory of conservation, urban and built heritage conservation, planning and management represent reference guidelines for generations of scholars and practitioners in the field. The unbeatable expression of Jokilehto’s contribution to the understanding of Conservation Philosophy lays in his book A History of Architectural Conservation: a fundamental textbook translated in eight languages, that obstinately resists time and trends and represents a compulsory study pathway for all scholars in the field.

He played a crucial role as a founding member of our doctoral program in Cultural Heritage Studies. Professor Jokilehto delivered his first lecture in October 2005 launching our joint Master program in Economics and Techniques for Conservation in Architectural and Environmental Heritage established between the University of Nova Gorica and Università IUAV di Venezia. We consider him as one of the fathers of our graduate programs with whom we have initiated the adventure of the first joint international educational initiative in the field.

Jukka will be remembered as an inspiring mentor, admired educator, and, most importantly, a human and esteemed colleague. We had the unique privilege of learning from him and experiencing his inexhaustible passion for knowledge and tenacious heritage stewardship.

We will remember professor Jokilehto not only as great scholar, but as a wonderful human being who, despite his numerous achievements and his outstanding professional charisma remained kind colleague, generous teacher and patient mentor.

We will miss him deeply.
