University of Nova Gorica has open position of assistant PhD student in the field of theoretical and experimental linguistics with a focus on Russian syntax and syntactic processing.

We invite candidates who are interested in working as an assistant (doctoral candidate) to apply for this position at the student-friendly and research-oriented University of Nova Gorica .
The work will be conducted at the Center for Cognitve Science of Language, in a dynamic and inter-disciplinary research environment supported by state-of-the-art equipment, and will include direct involvement in the international research arena.
We invite applications from candidates interested in syntax and sentence processing in the con-text of Slavic languages. The successful candidate will become a member on a research project investigating the phenomenon of free word order in Slavic languages (J6-4615) from theoretical and experimental perspective, under the supervision of prof. dr. Artur Stepanov. Research duties will include formulating research and experimental hypotheses, developing experimental protocol, collecting experimental data and their analysis.
As part of their employment, the candidate will work towards attaining a PhD degree as a stu-dent in the University of Nova Gorica’s 3rd-cycle (doctoral) study program Cognitive Science of language.
The candidate may also be asked to take on teaching obligations in the relevant pro-grammes at the university.

The successful candidate will be employed on a full-time basis for a fixed term of four years. The expected start date is October 1st, 2023.

The successful candidate should satisfy the following requirements:

  • aster's (2nd-cycle) degree or equivalent in the field of theoretical and/or experimental linguistics or psycholinguistics,
  • requirements for election to the title of “Assistant” at the University of Nova Gorica,
  • enrolment in the 3rd-cycle program in Cognitive Science of language at the Graduate School of the University of Nova Gorica for the 2023/24 academic year by the employ-ment start date,
  • native or native-like knowledge of Russian, fluent knowledge of English.

Desired competences and skills:

  • background in formal syntactic theory and behavioral psycholinguistics,
  • knowledge of statistical analysis of linguistic data using R or Python programming lan-guages,
  • familiarity and experience using online linguistic testing platforms,
  • experience using linguistic corpora and/or linguistic field work.
