An Overview of World Literature I

Objectives and competences

The students are familiar with the historical, cultural, and religious contexts of various world literatures and are capable of drawing comparisons and delineating differences between them.

Prerequisites

The subject relates to literary theory and other literary classes that are connected to literary history and other classes with literary contents

Content

The Overview of World Literature I incorporates the study of the literatures from the ancient times (Greek and Roman) and all the way to contemporary literary works. The lectures are interdisciplinary in its nature. The students will also get to know religious, mythological, and philosophical contexts that are essential for the study of individual world literatures. At the same time, chapters from cultural history, film studies, and art history will complement the lectures.

Intended learning outcomes

The students get to know various literary periods, major literary works and their authors, ranging from the ancient Greek literature to present times.

Assessment

In order to take the exam, the students need to successfully present their seminar work in front of the class and regularly attend the lectures. Seminar work – 30% Written exam – 60 % Class attendance (80%) – 10 %

Lecturer's references

Leonora Flis is an Associate Professor at the School of Humanities at the University of Nova Gorica. She teaches Contemporary Literary Theory, Selected Topics in World Literature (British and American Literature), and Literature and Other Arts (Film). Additionally, her areas of research include: literary journalism, documentary literature and documentary graphic novels (comics). Flis also writes book and film reviews and translates academic and literary texts. In 2011, she was awarded a Fulbright research fellowship and conducted research at Columbia University in New York.
