Acustics

This course is part of the programme
Bachelor's study programme Slovene Studies (1st Level)

Objectives and competences

The aim of this course is to provide students with an overview of acustics and acustic phonetics and to prepare them for individual research work. At the end of this course, students should be capable to identify relevant research questions and should know how to design and execute an experiment that would answer the identifies research questions.

Prerequisites

This course is linked to the other linguistic courses within this program. Minimum prerequisits are linguistic courses from the first two years of this program.

Content

This course is focused on the physical properties of sounds. Students will discuss the basic concepts of acoustics, the physical properties of sound waves and other properties of sound that are relevant in linguistic research. Unlike with other courses in this program, experimental work is essential. In order to propertly conduct
experiments, students will get exposed to all phases of experimental work – preparation,
conducting the experiemnt, analysis. Particulary for the preparations of the experimental work, knowledge acquired in linguistic courses prior to this course is important as it is otherwise impossible to decide that is worth checking in the experiment.

Intended learning outcomes

Aside from what they'll be capable to do, the outcomes of this course are also the products of their research, the expermients they have to prepare and execute during recitations and lab hours. So both the design and the execution of an experiment.

Assessment

Final exam, two mid‐term exams, inclass presentation of their term‐paper. In order to take the final exam, students first need to successfully pass the two mid‐terms and hand in the term‐paper.
