Open House for Prospective Students for the Academic Year 2013/2014

The programs that the University of Nova Gorica offers are full of potential, they are modern, innovative and interdisciplinary. They prepare people for professions that will importantly influence the future and are by all means unique in Slovenia. The students at our five schools and two colleges are given an excellent study environment and an integrated knowledge in the areas of natural sciences, technical sciences, biotechnical sciences, humanities, social sciences, arts, and management.

At our schools, knowledge is created in a stimulating environment and in a harmonious relationship between professors, students, and researchers on a daily basis. The scholarship is passed on to younger generations and also transferred into business environment. The student/professor ratio is five to one, meaning that in general there are five students for every one professor. In addition to that, we have top notch visiting faculty. All this enables high quality studies and more genuine interpersonal connections, as the professors can devote time to each individual student. Therefore, they know their students well and have a better overview of the actual knowledge and interests of individual students.

Within one year of graduation, 86 % of our graduates manage to find a job, despite recession. We share this percentage with the prestigious Oxford University. We believe that what makes that possible is the interdisciplinary nature of our programs. Moreover, we make sure that the practice oriented work of our students is indeed useful and that they come in regular contact with their potential employers, so the knowledge is transferred from the academic environment into the business sphere. Also, our university has a Career Center that is specifically oriented towards forming connections between the academic, business, and commercial environments.

We pay special attention to tracking the employability of our students and collecting information on the efficiency of their scholarship on the job market. Analyses show that within the first six month after graduation, 77% of our graduates find employment. As the goal of all our programs is to reach and keep high employability (above 80 % within the first year after graduation), the Career Center offers additional help to graduates seeking their first employment. The specificity of each individual profile is noted in the appendix to the diploma documents which are issued both in Slovene and in English.

The scholarship fund “Young Physics 2020” will become operative in 2013/2014. It includes donations that will, through scholarships, already in the academic year 2013/2014, enable students to enroll in the Physics program (Bachelor’s degree) at the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Nova Gorica. Each scholarship offers a grantee a monthly stipend of 200 EUR and lasts for all three years of study (every academic year, a student is funded for ten months). The requirement for keeping the scholarship is making a regular progress on the program that one is enrolled in. Among the sponsors, we can find companies like GEN-I (joint stock company) or, COSYLAB (joint stock company), Ajdovščina municipality, and a world-renowned research institute Sinhrotron from Trieste. The most prestigious scholarship awarded to the best student in each generation is donated personally by the Rector of the University of Nova Gorica, prof. dr. Danilo Zavrtanik.

As customary, we will organize free remedial education in subjects such as math, chemistry, physics, also in the academic year 2013/2014. It will be conducted in the form of two-week intensive courses in the month of September. By doing that, we wish to improve our students’ knowledge and by that, increase study success in the first year and, all in all, provide higher quality studies.

Funded student housing is available on two floors of the student campus on Erjavčeva ulica in Nova Gorica. There are 54 beds (26 shared bedrooms and 2 single rooms). All rooms were renovated in 2010. For further details on accommodation, see: www.ung.si/en/study/student-guide/
