Between April 8th and April 11th, 2013, the Laboratory of Organic Matter Physics at the University of Nova Gorica will organize an international scientific workshop that will join world's leading experts on graphene. They will exchange ideas about their research and also present them to thirty doctoral students from all over Europe.

International scientific workshop on the topic of graphene held at the University of Nova Gorica

The workshop will be held at the University’s center in Ajdovščina. It is being financed by the European scientific foundation. Specifically, the workshop is part of a program called EUROGRAPHENE, in which the Laboratory of Organic Matter Physics also participates. Among the speakers, we will have well-known and esteemed scientists from prestigious European and American institutions, such as Texas Instruments, USA, Max Planck Institute, Germany, Cambridge University, Great Britain and the like. The workshop participants will be able to listen to the lectures, as well as observe practical experiments which use the most recent research methods that are applied to checking the electronic and structural properties of graphene.

Graphene is one of the most exciting materials of our millennium. Especially after the Nobel prize has been won for graphene synthesis and its characterization, graphene has raised an immense interest among physicists, chemists, and engineers who design new applications for electronic devices. Graphene is composed of leaves of pure carbon, with atoms arranged in a regular hexagonal pattern whose width is not greater than that of one single atom. Due to its extremely regular structure and the way the atoms within it interconnect, the graphene displays an extraordinarily fast transmittance of electric charge as well as relative immunity to external influences. Moreover, it is flexible and durable, so it offers many options for production of lithe mobile phones, screens and biosensors.

The Laboratory of Organic Matter Physics at the University of Nova Gorica has been researching graphene for three years now and they have formed connections with many international research groups. Their research focuses mostly on the way electric charge is transported across graphene and the structures related to it. Moreover, the researches also deal with the initial phase of growth of organic graphene semiconductors. Apart from receiving the funds for the EUROGRAPHENE project, the research at the Laboratory has also got financial support from the Slovenian Research Agency.
