Events

Between 3rd and 5th October, 2013, the Slovenian Congress of Slavists will be taking place at the University of Nova Gorica's venue within the Lanthieri Mansion in Vipava (3rd October), at the Nova Gorica Grammar School (4th October), and around the region, to be specific, following the Soča front route (5th October).

Slovenian Congress of Slavists

The main attention will be directed towards the presentation of the youngest Slovenian University Center for Slavists which has been in existence – under the auspices of the University of Nova Gorica - since 2006, when the University was founded. The researchers, the professors, and the students will present its scientific and research activities, its pedagogical structure, their successful projects, as well as their dilemmas and issues at hand. Surely, the international impact of the Center’s research projects will represent a real interest, too, since this is how the topics that concern Slovenian Slavists make their way into the wider, global professional and scientific world (public). Moreover, the cultural and scholarly efforts of those who had worked in this field long before the University was established will become known through their exposure at the congress.

This central topic will be complemented by a series of other themed discussions and two roundtables. Lectures and a roundtable on Slovenian dictionary-writing, of the classical and electronic versions, will undoubtedly represent a significant point of interest. The same goes for presenting of new dictionaries, from historical to contemporary, from dictionaries of dialects to dictionaries of standard language, and lastly, there will be a discussion devoted to the actual process of writing dictionaries, which is a topic that has already caused heated debates in the media.

Topics that concern Slovene classes in schools is always a noteworthy topic to discuss. This year, we will be focusing on differentiation (level courses), as well as on broader goals of teaching Slovene, this truly central class in our schools.

We will, naturally, remember the 200th anniversary of the birth of F. Miklošič. We will talk about his less know work – high school readers and poetry.

Furthermore, we will be discussing the translation of Slavic literatures into Slovene, and, as has been customary for a few years now, we will familiarize ourselves with research achievements of the best graduates from all the Slovene universities. We will present new books and projects from this past year, award two teachers and two cultural workers from the Nova Gorica region for their remarkable work, namely, Nada Majcen and Helena Čujec Stres. The excursion - which has become traditional -will lead us along the Soča front route, from Sabotin to (and beyond) the former Italian border.

The Slovenian Congress of Slavists is a professional, scientific and rank meeting that is a product of collaborative work between the University of Nova Gorica, Slovenian Association of Slavists, and the Nova Gorica Association of Slavists. As always, it will monitor the current activities and achievements of the research field in question. It is a field of research that co-creates our cultural and national identity in a significant way.

Therefore, we believe that the Congress deserves attention of the public. We thus kindly invite you to join us and we also express our hopes that you are able to participate in at least part of our program. In the hopes that you can inform your target public, we send you our best wishes.

You are cordially invited to join the opening ceremony of the Slovenian Congress of Slavists which will be taking place on 3rd October2013, at 9.30 am, at the Lanthieri Mansion in Vipava.
