Objectives and competences
Students will be able to master language and content analyses of more complex texts and humanistic themes in English.
They will be able to master their writing skills at an advanced, more complex level, and to prepare and do their own presentation on a chosen topic. Also, students will have been able to develop their critical thinking skills, which will help them to continue with their work of reading complex themes in English.
The general objective of the course:
C1 level (according to CEFR, the European scheme of language knowledge).
Obligatory – knowledge of English at the secondary school or gimnazija level.
Desirable – knowledge of English acquired at the academic subjects English Language 1 or English Language 2.
- Attendance at lectures and practice sessions (at least 80%),
- Seminar assignment (essay and presentation).
Content (Syllabus outline)
At English 3, students will devote their time to the process of understanding, by means of textual analyses and reflective work, of a few selected humanistic themes (literary, literary-theoretical, literary-historical, and philosophical-psychological):
19 century English novel.
Mimesis: ancient Greek literary theory.
Hermeneutics: a tradition and method of text analysis.
The concept of canon in literature.
The idea of tradition in literature.
Intended learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
In the final stage of lectures, students will prepare their seminar assignment (an essay and an oral presentation on a chosen topic).
Knowledge and understanding of more complex English syntax.
Knowledge and understanding of more complex humanistic themes written in English.
Development of critical thinking skills.
Development of subjective thinking concerning the themes covered in the course of lectures.

Milena Kovačević holds BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature and Comparative Literature from University of Zagreb, and MPhil in Linguistics from the same university.
M. Kovačević has been awarded the Zagreb University Rector’s award.
Professional work in Zagreb: Faculty of Philosophy, Zagreb University, and British Council Zagreb. During her time in British diplomacy, Milena had an opportunity to have an intensive professional development in the United Kingdom.
Milena has received her academic habilitation with the University of Nova Gorica where she teaches English language and literature. Milena has had lectures at universities in France (Paris, Dijon), England (Norwich), Italy (Bergamo), Denmark (Aarhus), and Greece (Thessaloniki).
