A paper by Penka Stateva and Artur Stepanov published in Acta Linguistica Academica
Published in the current issue of the journal Acta Linguistica Academica, an International Journal of Linguistics (http://akademiai.com/loi/2062) is the paper Two “many”-words in Slovenian: experimental evidence for pragmatic strengthening by Penka Stateva and Artur Stepanov. The authors explore Slovenian expressions veliko and precej, both counterparts of the English many. The authors report on speakers’ judgements, according to which the veliko and precej are not equivalent, although the speakers find it hard to pinpoint the difference between the two items. The authors relate this intuition with the fact that the items receive subtle interpretative differences when their meanings are pragmatically strengthened under the relevant conditions, even though they are lexically synonymous.
